The Order of Good Cheer

Three Winters ago, we started the LR chapter of l’Ordre du Bons Temps / The Order of Good Cheer. It is the oldest Social Club in North America dating back 1605 at Port Royal. Tintamarre

This term has been used by Acadians for centuries and was/is translated as a “racket”, or “noisy gathering”. Early social events marked by music, dancing and merry celebrations were called such. The word was also used to describe the noisy arrival and departure of thousands of Canada geese that would land on the Chignecto marshes near the present day New Brunswick/Nova Scotia border during their north/south migrations. Place Savalette Commemorative Events

Festival Savalette opens every year with a commemorative service at the marked site of the 1607 meeting between Samuel de Champlain, Marc Lescarbot and Basque fishery entrepreneur,  Capitaine Savalette. This site was marked with a plaque mounted by the Canadian Government in 1949 on a large rock situated between Charlos Cove and Port Felix.
