Place Savalette Commemorative Events

Festival Savalette opens every year with a commemorative service at the marked site of the 1607 meeting between Samuel de Champlain, Marc Lescarbot and Basque fishery entrepreneur,  Capitaine Savalette. This site was marked with a plaque mounted by the Canadian Government in 1949 on a large rock situated between Charlos Cove and Port Felix. We recall this historic meeting with a short history of the event and how it relates to settlement attempts, relationships with Mi’kmaqs and the development of lucrative trading of products with the local natives.
